Seasonal Gap Theory for ENSO Phase Locking

چکیده

Abstract The life cycle of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) typically follows a seasonal march, onset in spring, developing during summer, maturing boreal winter, and decaying over the following spring. This feature is referred to as ENSO phase locking. Recent studies have noted that modulation growth rate essential for this process. study investigates fundamental effect seasonally varying on locking using modified seasonally-dependent recharge oscillator model. There are two regimes associated with strength rate: (1) weak regime which only single peak occurs; (2) strong types events occur either or double peak. Notably, there gap regime, cannot because large-scale ocean-atmosphere coupled processes. We also retrieve simple analytical solution variance ENSO, revealing governed by time-integral rate. Based formulation, we propose energy index (SEI) allows explaining gap, provides an intuitive explanation locking, potentially applicable global climate model diagnostics.

Mechanisms of Seasonal – ENSO Interaction

The mechanisms by which the seasonal cycle in the equatorial Pacific affects ENSO are investigated using the Zebiak and Cane ENSO prediction model. The most dominant seasonal effect is found to be due to the wind divergence field, as determined by the seasonal motion of the ITCZ, through its effect on the atmospheric heating. The next-order seasonal effects are due to the seasonality of the bac...

ENSO theory

Beginning from the hypothesis by Bjerknes [1969] that oceanatmosphere interaction was essential to the E1 Nifio-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere (TOGA) decade has not only confirmed this but has supplied detailed theory for mechanisms setting the underlying period and possible mechanisms responsible for the irregularity of ENSO. Essentials of the theo...

What controls phase-locking of ENSO to boreal winter in coupled GCMs?

In this study, the phase-locking of El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in a coupled model with different physical parameter values is investigated. It is found that there is a dramatic change in ENSO phaselocking in response to a slight change in the Tokioka parameter, which is a minimum entrainment rate threshold in the cumulus parameterization. With a smaller Tokioka parameter, the model sim...

Tvo - Phase Locking

Using simulation, we compare the performance of the Basic Timestamp, the Multiple Version Time&amp, and the Two-Phase Locking concurrency control algorithms. We find that in every system configuration ve have simulated the Multiple Version Timestamp algorithm performs only marginally better than the Basic Timestamp algorithm. In addition, we find that when the average transaction size is small,...

A delay differential model of ENSO variability, Part 2: Phase locking, multiple solutions, and dynamics of extrema

We consider a highly idealized model for El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability, as introduced in an earlier paper. The model is governed by a delay differential equation for sea surface temperature T in the Tropical Pacific, and it combines two key mechanisms that participate in ENSO dynamics: delayed negative feedback and seasonal forcing. We perform a theoretical and numerical study...
